Background

Maryborough’s Walk of Achievers … a celebration of how ordinary Australians can achieve extraordinary feats. It is a tribute to the remarkable and varied accomplishments of more than 90 current and former Maryborough residents who have helped shape our rich heritage. Those honoured include Pioneers, Rhode Scholars, Olympians & Sporting Heroes, Inventors, War Heroes, Science & Medicine, Law & Education, Writers & Journalists, Business & Political Leaders, Entertainment & the Arts and others whose endeavours have led to outstanding success and national and worldwide recognition.

The Maryborough Walk of Achievers project commenced in 1999,  a longtime dream of Ken Bennett, Grieg Bolderrow, Barbara Hovard and Margaret Wroe.  Originally funded by the Centenary of Federation Queensland Community Grants Fund and supported by the Maryborough District Family History Society, the Rotary Club of Maryborough Sunrise, Maryborough City Council and Arts Queensland through the Regional Arts Development Fund, Fraser Coast Chronicle, 4MB and Boultons Multimedia.

The original project aimed to recognise former residents of Maryborough who have made a significant contribution to our state, nation and on the world stage.  By way of recognition the Achievers of Maryborough will have a locally fabricated bronze plaque placed in the pavement within the Portside Precinct footpaths, supported by a publication and interpretive display at Customs House.

The first 20 Bronze Plaques were laid in pavers on the 26 January 2000 in Wharf Street and today there are more than 90 plaques placed in Wharf & Richmond Streets celebrating Maryborough’s Walk of Achievers.
